This role is pivotal in connecting scientific research with local fishing communities and stakeholders, facilitating knowledge transfer, and fostering sustainable fisheries management practices.
The Fisheries Extension Faculty will play a vital role in advancing the understanding of fisheries in the Pacific and ensuring the ecological and economic well-being of the region's aquatic resources.
The University of Hawai'i Sea Grant College Program seeks candidates whose extension activities, teaching, and scholarship will be centered on subtropical and tropical fisheries of the Pacific.
This position is part of a series of coordinated hires across multiple schools and colleges at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM).
Island nations across the Pacific are faced with increasing challenges in managing coastal resources stemming from globalization, growing demand, changes in governance systems, and climate change.
A broad understanding of the ecological, social, cultural, economic, governance, and policy dimensions of these often data-poor fisheries is required to develop creative and effective management strategies and policy options that can ensure the longevity of fisheries and the benefits they provide to people.
Initial positions to be hired at UHM are in the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management (NREM), the Oceanography Department, the Sea Grant College Program, and the Center for Pacific Island Studies to address the sustainability of tropical island and ocean fisheries.
In addition to research and extension activities, all four faculty will be expected to contribute to the creation and instruction of a new accredited graduate degree in fisheries to serve the needs of Hawai‘i and the Pacific region.
It is envisioned that this program will have multiple tracks to accommodate foci in both the natural and social science components of the field.
This position within the Sea Grant College Program will focus on extension that supports the research enterprise from the University, federal, state, and local government, management and policy of coastal and deep ocean fisheries, both commercial and non-commercial, within interconnected land-sea, human-natural systems.
Duties and Responsibilities: Outreach and Education: Develop, implement, and lead educational programs, workshops, and training sessions for fishers, fisheries managers, and community stakeholders across Hawai'i and the Pacific Region.
These programs should focus on sustainable fishing practices, resource management, and compliance with local and federal regulations.
Contribute as part of a collaborative team at UH to develop a graduate program in fisheries and provide instructional courses related to fisheries extension.
Applied Research: Collaborate with regional partners to integrate extension methodologies in applied research projects addressing critical issues in Pacific fisheries, including stock assessments, ecosystem dynamics, and the impacts of climate change.
Technical Assistance: Provide technical expertise and guidance to fishers, seafood businesses, and other stakeholders on adopting best practices, adopting innovative technologies, and enhancing business sustainability within the fisheries sector.
Community Engagement: Cultivate strong relationships with local fishing communities, indigenous groups, and relevant stakeholders to understand their unique needs and challenges.
Act as a liaison to facilitate their active involvement in fisheries management decisions.
Data Collection and Analysis: Collect and analyze fisheries-related data, such as catch and effort data, to inform management and policy decisions, assess the health of fisheries, and support sustainable practices.
Grant Writing and Fundraising: Seek external funding opportunities and grants to support extension activities, applied research, and regional initiatives.
Collaborate with partners on grant proposal development.
Publications and Reporting: Disseminate research findings, best practices, and regulatory updates through reports, publications, and educational materials targeted at diverse audiences.
Regional Collaboration: Collaborate with other Sea Grant Program faculty, researchers, and partners within the Pacific Region on interdisciplinary projects and initiatives that contribute to sustainable fisheries.
Professional Development: Stay current with advancements in fisheries science, extension methodologies, and technology through ongoing professional development, conferences, and workshops.
Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing, with major work in fisheries science, marine biology or related fields.
Or in addition to the bachelor’s degree, 30 credit hours of post-baccalaureate academic work in fisheries science, marine biology or related fields.
At least three (3) years of successful experience in Cooperative Extension work, Sea Grant Extension work or equivalent in closely related fields.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and to assume responsibility for developing an Extension program.
Ability to work harmoniously with other agents in an integrated Extension system, and with related agencies.
Desirable Qualifications PhD from a college or university of recognized standing with major work in fisheries science, marine biology, or a related field.
In-depth knowledge of Pacific fisheries, marine ecosystems, and the unique challenges faced by fisheries in the Pacific Region.
Proven experience in conducting applied research and fieldwork in fisheries.
Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
Strong grant writing and fundraising experience.
Excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
Willingness to travel frequently within the Pacific Region and work flexible hours as required.
