To provide support services to experienced animal trainers and gain the knowledge and proficiency necessary to become an active team member in animal training and care.
This is an apprenticeship period where on-the-job training is essential.
The apprentice will observe, assist, and acquire second-hand experience.
New apprentices will not interact with any animal unless directed to do so by management.
Full time, flexible availability to include weekends and holidays.
We are currently looking for a: Sea Life Park Hawaii - Apprentice Trainer Roles & Responsibilities: Essential Duties:  Responsible for proper food preparation, sanitation and distribution.
 Administers safe and appropriate feeding.
 Acquire knowledge of basic training and vocabulary.
 Effectively use Approximations.
 Acquire knowledge of proper animal husbandry.
 Be able to identify each animal by name.
 Acquire a firm knowledge of each animal's history.
 Acquire experience in safe and proper handling, restraint, and transportation of animals.
 Acquire experience with public contact by performing in demontrations /presentations and speaking in front of an audience.
 Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions: Indoors in a trainer's lounge facility with/without air conditioning.
Facility includes: bathroom, lockers, refrigerator, sink, conference table and communication boards.
Outdoors under all types of weather conditions.
Working in a salt-water environment in and out of the water at all times of the day and/or night as required.
Work Hours: Flexible.
(Must be able to work weekends and holidays as required.
) Normal Schedules: Flexible, may require additional hours (Early and/or Late) beyond schedule to meet departmental and animal needs.
Work schedule consists of 5 days a week, 8 hours per day.
No guarantee of 40 hours/week.
Equipment Use: Standard Office Equipment (i.
e.
, pager, computer, copier, fax, telephone), Training Tools such as: targets, whistle bridges, underwater tone systems, etc.
, Diving Equipment, Sharp Knives, Water/Garden Hose, Power Sprayer, Electronic Scale, Scrub Brushes/Brooms/Mops and other cleaning utensils or supplies, Various Chemicals for cleaning and disinfecting, Buckets, Company "pick-up" Truck and/or Vehicle.
May be asked to use hand and power tools only if incumbent can demonstrate proficiency in the use of these tools/equipment to proper management.
Mental and Physical Demands: Duties require dependability and the use of judgment, problem-solving, organization, working under direct supervision, and following established procedures or routine.
Duties require working under deadlines and effectively dealing with frustrating situations.
Requires establishing and maintaining cooperative and productive work relationships and relate to guests/colleagues in a friendly and professional manner.
Duties are frequently performed under physically demanding conditions and potentially hazard environments, including in enclosed spaces in and out of water with marine mammals and/or sea birds.
Requires being physically qualified to perform proper rescue and evacuation procedures in and out of the water, lift and carry 50 lb.
cases of fish and 20 LB buckets of fish, proficient swimming skills and ability to pass departmental swim test.
Communication Demands: Requires communicating effectively both orally and written and the ability to follow oral and written instructions and directives.
Ability to communicate appropriately as outlined in the departmental communication tree.
