This is a seagoing position aboard oceanographic research vessels operated by the University of Hawai‘i Marine Center (UHMC).
Operates and maintains deck machinery, cranes, winches, boats and other shipboard equipment, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in the deck department.
Performs watch-standing duties for navigation, operations, and security purposes, conducts preventative maintenance work on the vessel, and serves as a socially responsible member of the ship’s crew providing a cooperative and safe working environment for the embarked scientific personnel and research project objectives.
Operates hand tools and other equipment to perform routine maintenance work such as chipping, scrapping, painting, priming and/or cleaning of the ship’s hull, decks, interior spaces, boats, emergency and damage control gear, deck tackle, small boat and launch repair.
Must possess a current Merchant Mariners Certificate (MMC) as AB with endorsement for Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW), and a current U.
S.
Coast Guard (USCG) medical certificate.
Must possess required Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) documentation and valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) (minimum six (6) months prior to renewal).
All documentation must be maintained in valid status throughout duration of employment.
