The Student Career Specialist will empower students to make informed decisions about their career and educational journey based in design thinking.
This person in this position will work directly with Career & Technical Education (CTE) program coordinators, departments, and employers to develop networks for students to make in-person and virtual connections towards work-based learning.
The person in this position will perform the full range of professional work while exercising flexible, independent judgment and discretion.
The work will be completed in person and remotely, based on project needs and campus directives.
Duties and Responsibilities: Provides staff support in the following field of assignment or subject matter areas: career development, employer relations, and job preparation.
Independently coordinate activities within the objectives and scope of the grant project.
Develop and coordinate new and ongoing partnerships with businesses and industries at appropriate internship work sites.
Work collaboratively with employer partners in developing, enhancing, and/or maintaining internship positions that align with the educational goals of the college and students.
Collaborate with program coordinators and faculty to advise students on relevant internship or job opportunities that match their goals and interests.
Maintain and expand career development resources to include job search strategies, interpersonal skills development, workplace culture and preparation, and transferable skills.
Establish and present information through pre-employment workshops, career panels, and current labor market information trends.
Manage database of on-campus and off-campus employment opportunities and internship partner sites.
Coordinate job and career fairs.
Manage online job and career development software, (i.
e.
Handshake, SECE, Focus2Career).
Support student internships, including connecting CTE programs to appropriate internship sites, assessing, and improving internship students’ learning experiences in consultation with faculty, and performing internship site visits to monitor progress.
Advise students and site supervisors to develop goals, objectives, and performance criteria of internship experience, and demonstrate evidence of learning.
Create, implement, and analyze employer and student evaluations, report findings.
Coordinate, develop and implement strategies to meet student, college, and community needs based on evaluations and other data.
Hire, supervise, schedule, train, and approve work hours for Student Assistants.
Manage student data and prepare reports as needed.
Maintain program equipment and inventory of educational supplies.
Collaborate with other Student Career Specialists to deliver project activities across three campuses.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, human development, or related field and minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience of which 2 years include coordinating student support services and programs for students, or equivalent education/training or experience.
Working knowledge of high impact practices and principles in career center services, as demonstrated by the understanding of and ability to apply concepts.
Working knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and systems associated with higher education and work-based learning opportunities for students.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive, productive, and effective working relationships within internal and external organizations, including workgroup team members, students, faculty, staff, administration, and the community at large.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write proceduresand reports, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processingsoftware.
Desirable Qualifications: Master’s degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Student Affairs, or any other field that is related to the duties of the position.
Experience in coordinating work-based learning opportunities.
Experience conducting presentations, workshops and/or instruction to internal and external audiences.
Knowledge of practices and techniques of human resources and management.
Knowledge of degree programs offered at Kapi‘olani Community College.
Knowledge and understanding of trends that affect employment outlook.
Demonstrated ability to use professional judgment in a variety of settings.
Familiar with computer and online software to create, properly format, and maintain spreadsheets, email, and presentations.
