Duties and Responsibilities
*Assists with the development and delivery (education/training) of cultural and plant science related curriculum for the Lyon Arboretum's children's (K - 12) educational programs.
*Assists with the development and delivery (education/training) of adult educational programs and program activities.
*Assists with the development of plant/natural science curriculum and workshops for teachers that will help them in their classrooms.
*Assists with the organization (registration, public relations, purchasing of supplies, etc.
) associated with children's and adult education courses.
*Develops and prepares signage and interpretive materials for educational exhibits throughout Lyon Arboretum.
*Assists with the coordination, recruitment, development, and record keeping associated with volunteer programs at Lyon Arboretum.
*Assists in carrying out educational aspects associated with special events and community outreach for the Lyon Arboretum.
*Develops, coordinates, and instructs children's summer and intersession programs.
*Assists in supervision of student assistants, interns, and volunteers in activities as necessary.
*Assists with the maintenance of the Children's Garden and Children's Learning Center.
*Assists in data compilation and interpretation of Lyon Arboretum visitor and education programs.
*Schedules, coordinates, and trains guides/docents for public tours, special tours, and school field trips at Lyon Arboretum.
*Participates in and assists with the coordination and planning of periodic weekend instruction, courses and/or events.
*Works outdoors in exhibits with uneven terrain and subject to inclement weather conditions.
*Travels to various locations for special events or community outreach for the Lyon Arboretum.

Education and Professional Work Experience Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Education, Biology, Ethnobotany, Horticulture, Botany, or related field and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for education, training, and/or teaching; or equivalent education/training or experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in formal and/or informal education settings demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with standards based in formal and/or informal education settings.
Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the education of K-12 students and teachers and/or informal education settings.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
Equivalencies Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Supplemental Minimum Qualifications Previous experience working with children, k-12 in the classroom and/or informal educational settings such as museums or botanical gardens.
Demonstrated ability to use database software, technology associated with video and sound editing; Google Suite applications; Zoom and video conferencing technologies; social media platforms including but not limited to YouTube, lnstagram, and Facebook.
Work experience in conducting and leading internship and/or Camp programs.
Must be able to work in uneven terrain in inclement conditions.
Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawaii Driver’s license (class 3), comparable driver’s license, or other means of transportation, which meets position needs.
Desirable Qualifications Familiarity with museum or garden interpretation.
Functional knowledge of plant identification.
Functional knowledge of Hawaiian ecosystems.
Familiarity with Hawaiian ethnobotany, related cultural activities, and/or conservation issues in Hawaii.
Experience with social media and website design and development.
Experience in public relations.
School garden development and maintenance experience.
Ability to lift and carry weights at least of 50 lbs.
