Duties and Responsibilities 1.
Conduct architecture applied research related to urban, ecological, and architectural designs, plans, and solutions to highly complex and technical issues related to the University of Hawaii Community Design Center (UHCDC) projects.
2.
Develop innovative graphic and other media interfaces for collecting and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative user research data.
3.
Synthesize user research into user network diagrams, service blueprints, and other user research formats for final reports and recommendations.
4.
Perform applied research studies including literature, policy, existing document reviews, social, historical, cultural, political, economic, urban and ecological analysis of project areas.
5.
Develop full scale prototyping of spatial or formal conditions for research and design feedback related to cancer treatment patient areas and public housing units or other public housing conditions as identified in user research studies.
6.
Prototype user interfaces and protocols for users.
7.
Oversee budgets, timelines, work plans, deliverables, and reporting requirements; ensure tasks are completed by the project team in a timely and professional manner and in accordance with the relevant project contracts.
8.
Write, proofread, and edit research and project reports.
9.
Manage and maintain quality assurance for projects, including, and especially, graphic and written communication for all internal and external presentations and materials.
10.
Coordinate the maintenance and backup of project data, files, and documents both electronic and hard copy.
11.
Train, evaluate and supervise project team members, along with undergraduate/graduate students.
12.
Keep abreast of architectural trends, products and systems.
13.
Other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications 1.
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in architecture, urban planning, or related fields of study and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for design-related mastery in architecture; landscape architecture, urban design,service design; or equivalent education/training or experience.
2.
Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the built environment principles and best practices as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
3.
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with architectural design.
4.
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
5.
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
6.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
7.
Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
8.

Desirable Qualifications 1.
Advanced degree in Architecture and/or additional professional degree(s) in landscape architecture, planning, or other interdisciplinary fields.
2.
Professional license to practice architecture or landscape architecture in the United States.
3.
Experience in architecture on analogous project types or using similar research and design processes as evidenced by a sample of work.
4.
Evidence of past leadership in design outreach, education, and advocacy initiatives.
5.
Evidence of experience and interest in public-interest design.
6.
Ability to advance the architecture and landscape architecture discipline as evidenced, for example, in peer-recognized designs, awards, or publications.
