The Hawaiian Culture and Education Manager position is a dynamic leadership and management role.
This role will have direct oversight of Kualoa Ranch’s Hawaii Culture initiatives as well as its Hakipu’u Education Center (HEC).
As it relates to Hawaiian Culture, this position is responsible for preserving, promoting, and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Hawaii and Kualoa Ranch to its employees and its guests.
This role involves leading initiatives to educate, engage, and connect individuals within and outside the organization with Hawaiian traditions, values, language, arts, and history.
This position will also directly oversee Kualoa Ranch’s Hakipuʻu Education Center (HEC), whose mission is to be the best youth outdoor education center in Hawaii.
We believe in the profound impact of connecting young minds with the natural world and Hawaiian Culture fostering a lifelong love for nature and cultivating essential life skills.
Key Responsibilities Hakipu’u Education Center: • Youth Education Program Development: • Design and develop outdoor education programs that align with educational standards, goals, and the organization's mission.
• Create engaging and age-appropriate curricula that promotes concepts of mālama ʻāina and kuleana.
• Curriculum Planning: • Immerse students in age-appropriate, memorable experiences that enhance a sense of place, both local and global.
• These experiences should also align in Hawaiian cultural values as they relate to the identity and kuleana of Kualoa Ranch to the community.
• Participant Engagement: • Foster a positive and inclusive learning environment, engaging participants through experiential learning activities, team building, and adventure-based challenges.
• Evaluation and Assessment: • Collect feedback from participants and staff to assess program effectiveness and make necessary improvements.
Monitor and evaluate participant learning outcomes.
• Marketing and Outreach: • Promote outdoor education programs to schools, youth organizations, and the community.
Develop marketing materials and maintain relationships with partner organizations.
• Safety and Risk Management: • Develop and enforce safety protocols, risk assessment procedures, and emergency response plans to ensure the safety of participants and staff during outdoor activities.
Hawaiian Culture: • Hawaiian Cultural Education: • Create and implement internal educational programs, workshops, and events that promote awareness and understanding of Hawaiian culture to all Kualoa Ranch employees on a regular occurring basis.
• Engage with local communities, schools, and organizations to facilitate cultural exchange and learning opportunities.
• Community Engagement: • Foster relationships with indigenous communities, cultural practitioners, scholars, and institutions to support the sharing and perpetuation of Hawaiian knowledge and practices.
• Act as a liaison between the organization and the Hawaiian community to ensure cultural sensitivity and inclusivity in all initiatives.
• Cultural Preservation: • Develop and oversee strategies to preserve and safeguard Hawaiian traditions, cultural artifacts, and historical sites.
Qualifications: • Bachelor's in Hawaiian Studies, Cultural Anthropology, History, Education / Early Childhood Education or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
Experience with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and Hawaiian ʻāina-based education is desired.
• In-depth knowledge and understanding of Hawaiian history, language, customs, and cultural protocols.
• Proven leadership experience in cultural preservation, education, or advocacy.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Preferred: • Conversational fluency in Hawaiian language (ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi) desired.
• Experience working within Hawaiian cultural organizations or institutions.
• Outdoor Skills: Proficiency in various outdoor activities such as hiking, water activities, gardening etc.
• Passion: A genuine passion for outdoor education and a commitment to fostering personal growth and environmental stewardship in participants.
Ability to show a continual relationship and commitment to Hawaiian cultural values and practices is preferred.
• Adaptability: The ability to adapt to changing weather conditions and unexpected challenges that may arise during outdoor programs.
