The primary objective of this position is to ensure the successful operation of the department, while creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students can develop a strong sense of belonging throughout their academic journey at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
In this role, the Director will provide visionary leadership by developing and implementing long-term strategic plans, and staying updated on emerging trends and best practices in student affairs.
Responsibilities include overseeing a diverse range of co-curricular programs such as student union complex programming, services, facilities, and governance.
The Director’s portfolio will also include student publications and broadcast media services, along with oversight of leisure and recreational services, and provide guidance and support to both undergraduate and graduate student governments.
The SLD Director has oversight of approximately 40 professional staff representing all UH bargaining units.
Additionally, they provide direction and vision for the on-going training and education of all students who work in the many SLD service areas.
Financial management is a significant responsibility of the Director of Student Life & Development.
This includes facilitating the development, management, and allocation of financial resources for student life programs and activity fee-funded organizations.
The Director will be responsible for the oversight and management of the Campus Center Complex operating and capital project budgets, grants, memoranda of understanding, etc.
Furthermore, the Director will support the development and administration of annual budgets for student life programs and activity fee-funded organizations, which combined with the Campus Center Complex operations amount to approximately $20 million in annual managed revenues and expenditures.
Through facility management, the Director will oversee the successful operation of the Campus Center Complex, approximately 265,000 square feet, which includes the following facilities: - Campus Center with 160,452 sq ft of meeting and event space, offices, campus eateries and service areas such as the ID and Information Office and Bookstore;- Hemenway Hall at 34,866 sq ft, comprising of Chartered Student Organization (CSO) spaces including the student media groups, the food pantry, and tenants such as the Dental Hygiene Clinic and campus eateries;- Warrior Recreation Center, the fitness center with 69,523 sq ft of exercise, restroom, and locker room spaces.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESEnhance the quality of campus life by expanding co-curricular programs and services which positivelyimpacts student persistence and retention, sense of belonging, and engagement.
Oversees the multifaceted operations for the University's Campus Center Complex to include fiscalmanagement, marketing activities, event planning and coordination, facility operations, staffing, employeemanagement and development.
This will also include advising the governing Chartered StudentOrganization, the Campus Center Board, management of lease agreements, renovations and constructionprojects, and all other associated activities.
Manages the designing of opportunities and activities that promote the co-curricular experience, out-of-classroom learning, and the development of campus community using the Campus Center Complex as a central hub for engagement.
Leads the execution and provides oversight of assessment and evaluation processes to measure departmental effectiveness, student satisfaction and engagement and curricular learning outcomes.
The Director also conducts regular self-studies and data reports.
Establishes and implements short- and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
Collaborates and partners with internal and external partners to ensure facilities and services support the needs of the student body and campus community, to include partnership with student governments, vendors, University administrators, campus partners, and other applicable entities.
Provides leadership and support to the area of Student Recreation Services to include programs and services including intramural sport programs, outdoor education, aquatics, and fitness/wellness.
Oversees the Director of Student Life Business Services, who is the central point of contact for communications between the University and our dining services concessions contract partner providing student meals within our residential and retail dining locations to include catering.
Plans, develops, and implements strategies for generating resources and/or revenues for the organization.
Develops and manages annual budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analyses.
Represents and supports the University mission to students, student organizations, University departments, administrative units, community groups, and alumni, while effectively communicating and explaining University policies and procedures, including their intent, rationale, and philosophical approach.
Provides leadership for the comprehensive development and evaluation of student leadership programs, volunteer initiatives, and staff/faculty professional growth, encompassing recruitment, orientation, ongoing training, and skill enhancement to fulfill the department's mission effectively.
Consults with students, University administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, colleagues and community representatives on the development and evaluation of goals, programs.

Establishes direction for and manages the office to provide a stable, cost-effective and secure one-card platform for the University’s ID card privilege and transaction management system.

Initiates recommendations and proposals that support Community Standards.
