Under general supervision, the Lead Mobile Equipment Mechanic will perform a variety of specialized and highly skilled duties in the servicing and repair of heavy mobile equipment, such as front-end loaders, forklifts, tractors, trailers, and other light- and heavy-operating equipment, powered by gasoline and diesel, and will lead the work of a crew of mobile equipment mechanics, to support the facility’s overall operations.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES: · Performs required preventive maintenance, trouble-shooting and analysis with testing equipment on vehicles and heavy equipment operating problems.
· Plans details of jobs assigned.
· Determines the tools, parts, supplies, and equipment necessary to perform the job.
· Performs required repairs to vehicles and heavy equipment, braking system, engines, fuel system, power train, electrical system and hydraulic system.
· Performs vehicle and equipment inspections, adjusts or replaces worn components.
· Uses equipment manuals or system database for referencing.
· Performs vehicle and heavy equipment system electronics and programming.
· Consults with operations and works cooperatively with vehicle operators, ensuring that vehicles are being serviced properly.
· Follows lubricating schedules for all facility vehicles and heavy equipment to ensure that equipment is operating efficiently.
· Performs basic welding and torch cutting.
· Frequently is required to lift and carry 50 lbs, push and pull 100 lbs.
· Occasionally exposed to working in extreme heat and weather.
· Understands and safely operates hand tools.
Is self-motivated, capable of performing job requirements with little supervision.
· Attends equipment training programs, maintains current technical knowledge of facility rolling stock.
· Directs trainees, helpers, and other support personnel assisting in the maintenance activities.
· Completes work order corrective actions, log books as required in a clear and legible manner, ensures accuracy of time reporting on all repair activities.
Is constantly alert to unsafe working conditions and is certain that all safety precautions are being used and that work is conducted in a safe manner.
· Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
· Wears all personal protective equipment at all times.
· Attends and participates in scheduled training and safety programs.
Knows, understands and complies with all company safety regulations and procedures.
· Attends pre-job safety briefs/tool box talks, utilizes and follows Job Safety Analysis for repairs when available.
· Follows departmental lock-out/tag-out procedures and program.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: · Can analyze equipment and determine appropriate repair strategize with little supervision.
· Has advanced skills in understanding mechanical troubleshooting and repair procedures.
· Is able to utilize equipment manuals and schematics for parts and repair.
· Can thoroughly complete equipment inspections and identify worn or damaged components.
· Is able to read, write, and verbally communicate in English.
· Possesses basic language and math skills.
Can interpret and perform given repair instructions and follow procedures.
· Has considerable knowledge of the principles of vehicle motors, gear trains, diesel engines, hydraulic functions, air brake systems, and heavy equipment maintenance.
· Has basic fabricating skills and is able to torch cut steel plate and structural shapes.
· Has basic welding skills.
· Has a understanding of the equipment diagnosing programs on facility rolling stock.
· Has the ability to set up and plan repairs and component replacement with little supervision.
· Familiar with vehicle and heavy equipment system electronics and programming.
· Understands heat transfer and can utilize heating sources for close tolerance fitting.
· Can safely and effectively use all needed hand tool for repair activities.
· Demonstrates initiative and is self-motivated, needs little supervision to carry out given tasks.
· Can frequently lift and carry 50 lbs, push/pull 100 lbs.
· Basic heavy equipment operating experience.
· Is able to meet the physical requirements of the position, including walking, bending, stooping, kneeling or climbing for extended hours.
· Forklift operator’s certification.
· Has a good safety record and demonstrated ability to follow the facility safety program.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: · High school diploma or equivalent.
· Minimum of four years vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance experience, or two years of mechanical trade school training and two years’ experience as a vehicle and heavy equipment mechanic.
· Must be able to operate mobile equipment such as front-end loader and tractor/trailer.
· Required to pass a respirator fit test and be clean shaven.
· Current valid CDL Class A license is a plus PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
